中国队在过去的三场18强赛上，某些表现非常业余，比如被身材并不高大的日本球员几次头球得分，与沙特队比赛，更是被对手利用两次角球机会头球扳平比分、头球绝杀取胜，“高空作业”以前是中国队对付日本队、沙特队的“撒手锏”，如今却被对手以其人之道，还治其人之身，所以，伊万在战术安排、临场指挥上，确实难以令人满意。

伊万的另一个争议之处，在于队员的选择上。当然，主教练有自己的用人标准，这一点无可厚非，比如伊万不选择近期联赛中表现不错的某些队员，他一定是有理由的。不过，在任用新人方面，伊万有揠苗助长之嫌。中国国脚基本是循序渐进成长型的，首次入选国家队，马上就被委以重任，对于我们的年轻队员而言，其实是存在很大风险的。

比如成都蓉城的新人胡荷韬，他在与澳大利亚队比赛结束后面临的心理压力，可能只有他自己清楚有多大。中国队曾发生过类似的故事，“破格提拔使用”很可能事与愿违，伊万在选人和用人上“理想化”，说到底他还是不太了解现阶段的中国足球。
