今年是该评选进行的第65届，其每年由《踢球者》杂志组织，投票者是德国体育记者协会（VDS）的成员，候选人为在德国联赛中效力的球员、教练，以及在国外踢球的德国籍球员、教练。

共有751人参与投票，其中2票为无效票。球员得票方面，克罗斯获得285票，维尔茨246票第二，扎卡66票第三。教练得票方面，阿隆索获得503票，斯图加特主帅小赫内斯74票第二，海登海姆主帅弗兰克-施密特第三。

34岁的克罗斯已经结束了自己的职业生涯，他在今年帮助皇马赢得欧冠和西甲冠军，在德国本土欧洲杯帮助球队打入八强。
