目前皇马的中卫人选依次是吕迪格、琼阿梅尼、阿森西奥和门迪。由于琼阿梅尼在对阵米兰时遭遇左脚踝扭伤，球队的防线排布受到影响。他预计将在一到两周内复出，安菲尔德之战出场机会渺茫。在他缺阵期间，中卫将由吕迪格和青训小将阿森西奥担任。

门迪此前在皇马仅有两次担任中卫的经历，都是在2021年齐达内执教时期的三后卫体系中完成。

如果真要启用门迪，安切洛蒂的应急方案是让他踢中卫，弗兰-加西亚则顶替左后卫位置。这一决定也凸显出巴列霍在球队中的尴尬处境，主帅宁可让门迪临时客串中卫也不愿启用他。在冬窗引援无望的情况下，门迪将成为球队的第四中卫选择。
